Crime is a sub-genre that has been largely forgotten for some time, much to the disappointment of audiences committed to good mystery. However, it has made a comeback in a big way with the release of works like Murder On The Orient Express, Death On The Nile, See How They Run and most notably Knives Out.
It was released in 2019 and directed by Rian Johnson, who previously directed Brick, Looper and most notably Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After navigating a franchise blockbuster, he decided to create a little comedy-mystery with a stacked cast, mostly set in one location.
It was acclaimed by both critics and general audiences alike, and fans were eager to see Daniel Craig’s central detective Benoit Blanc return for more straight after.
He actually has, but does Knives Out have to be seen before Glass Onion?
Do you have to see Knives Out before Glass Onion?
No, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery presents audiences with a brand new mystery to delve into. Although Daniel reprises his Knives Out role, the central mystery of the predecessor plays no role in the sequel.
Those who haven’t seen Knives Out will have no trouble following the plot, as all of the characters Benoit meets are new to the budding franchise.
All the audience needs to know is that Benoit craves a new and difficult case, but this one is addressed in Glass Onion’s first act.
Ultimately, the Knives Out franchise offers an opportunity to offer viewers a brand new mystery and cast with each film.
What awaits us this time is tech billionaire Miles Bron (played by Edward Norton) who invites his friends to his private island for a crime thriller, and Benoit is unexpectedly invited despite having no relationship with the guests or the host.
However, it soon becomes apparent that the detective has a real case to solve when the party is interrupted by a terrifying crime.
