The World Cup continues for Group A and first place is at stake when the Netherlands and Ecuador meet on Friday. The group rivals are meeting for the first time at a World Cup and have previously met only twice in international friendlies, a close encounter with a draw and a win for the Netherlands. Ecuador opened the group stage with a 2-0 win over tournament hosts Qatar. The Netherlands won their opening game by beating Senegal 2-0. The previous victories mean that a win by either team will see them top spot with one game remaining in the group stage.

Team News

Netherlands: The Netherlands’ opening win was only secured in the 84th minute as Cody Gakpo scored the breakthrough against Senegal. An extra late stoppage-time insurance goal from Davy Klaassen secured all three points, but the team will need to start faster against Ecuador if they want to take first place. Watch as Gakpo builds on his goals while Virgil van Dijk ensures the Netherlands smother any Ecuador counterattacks.

Ecuador: Enner Valencia was the man with a plan in Ecuador’s opening win against Qatar. The 33-year-old forward converted from the penalty spot and parried a header with a perfectly timed move to make it 2-0. The team exudes fearlessness and isn’t afraid to run straight at the defence. Valencia need treatment and he’s making it difficult and if left-back Pervis Estupinan can stay creative down the flank, Ecuador could shock the tournament.

forecast

The Netherlands break through before half-time and things get interesting in the second half, but late-game heroics secure the win once again. Choose: Netherlands 2, Ecuador 1
