The Thanksgiving holiday week is here. With kids out of school, this is a good time to bring an animated film to theaters, right? However, Disney’s new animated film Strange World looks set for a steep rise, having already enjoyed a slow start at the box office. Worse, initial estimates suggest that earnings during the Thanksgiving holiday week will be well below Disney’s expectations.
As Variety reported, the well-reviewed film grossed just $800,000 during Tuesday’s previews. While that sounds like a lot of money, it does indicate very little expected earnings for a film of this nature during the Thanksgiving holiday season. Because first box office sales are so important in the industry, Disney could see this film as a flop.
Strange World is an animated film about a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, attempting to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land. Despite positive reviews ahead of time and a boost from the trailer showing in theaters ahead of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, sales are looking grim. According to reports, the initial estimate of making at least $30 million over the Thanksgiving holiday seems unlikely.
Of course, animated films work differently than blockbuster Marvel films. Traditionally, families wait longer to make sure the film is worth their hard-earned money. But the $800,000 pales in comparison to other Disney films in initial sales. Since Strange World cost at least $135 million (possibly over $180 million) to make, Disney wants a better return on investment.
The trend of animated films not doing so well since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic could be alarming for Disney. With Minions: The Rise of Gru, produced by Illuminations and Universal, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide, Disney is wondering how to adapt to this trend. Since the competition is the only one to find a way to break the downward trend in animation films since 2020, a new action plan may need to be put in place.
Though we’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the Thanksgiving holiday week plays out, this start is looking bleak for Strange World. Things could revolve around the sale of this film. So far, however, this film has looked doomed on a distant planet with no chance of returning home with a win.
