Cadillac Williams, Auburn’s interim soccer coach, should earn the opportunity to permanently oversee the Tigers’ program, according to U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn).
Tuberville was Auburn’s head coach from 1999 to 2008. During his tenure with the Plains, Williams emerged as the most prolific offensive player of the Tuberville era.
Now 18 years from his playing days, Williams finds himself in serious competition to become his alma mater’s next head coach. The former running back star is currently 2-1 as interim head coach, with his only loss coming to Mississippi State in a 39-33 overtime thriller.
After picking up his first win against Texas A&M, the swagger that brought Williams to the sidelines turned out to spread to an optimistic fan base. Thanks in no small part to the caretaker coach’s efforts, Auburn fans have filled the stands at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the last two games.
After reinvigorating the ailing Tigers program, Williams has earned his name among the top contenders for one of the most prestigious jobs in all of college football.
When asked during an interview on Wednesday’s WUMP sports radio show “In the Booth” whether Auburn should make Williams the next head coach, Tuberville gave his former player a resounding endorsement.
“Well, they should. And it’s a big task. Tell you what, he did a great job just keeping the guys focused,” Tuberville said. “When you lose a coach and half the coaching staff, you just have to keep your guys focused. And Carnell is motivated. You know, he was jumping around and motivating players more than he was training. But the good thing is that he lets the guys train who name plays and defenses. They’ve had good game plans in the last three games. And he basically just kept the guys motivated off the bench and kept the crowd engaged.
According to Tuberville, a win at the Iron Bowl would cement Williams as a prime contender for the coaching job.
“It will be a little more difficult this time because they are playing away from home. But again, I think Carnell did an excellent job,” the senator added. “And I think you should look at him. Of course, if they win this game, there will be a lot of feelings about hiring Carnell.”
